Days before the riot, Romney received a warning call from Senator Angus King about violent threats being made online against him and other lawmakers. He alerted Mitch McConnell, urging him to prepare security, but received no response.
On the day itself, as the mob approached, Romney defied orders to shelter in place so he could return to the Senate chamber. Shortly after he arrived, the chamber erupted into chaos as the Secret Service evacuated Mike Pence and officers yelled for senators to take cover.
In the midst of the panic, Romney confronted Republican senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, angrily blaming them for inciting the insurrection by spreading Trump's election lies despite knowing better.
This rare outburst reflects Romney's fury at the president's dishonesty and his colleagues' complicity in undermining democracy for political gain. An eye-opening look inside a pivotal moment in history from the senator's perspective.
